IT organizations are adopting OpenStack in order to greatly simplify the provisioning and consumption of infrastructure. It has benefited developer teams by enabling them to acquire VMs in minutes. DevOps is realizing benefits through simplified management and significantly improved utilization of resources.

As OpenStack adoption grows, companies are studying new infrastructure architectures that best fit the OpenStack model. Fabric computing is one such new architecture. It redefines the traditional server by disaggregating CPU, Memory, Networking, and Storage into shared pools of hardware resources, all connected across a high performance fabric. This is an architecture that is well suited to the provisioning model of OpenStack.

In this talk we will share our experience deploying OpenStack on a fabric compute architecture. We will share our deployed architecture, realized benefits, lessons learned, and things we would like to see from infrastructure providers in the future.

Some of the experiences shared will include:

Speed of Deployment - How quickly OpenStack can be deployed and additional capacity added?

Power and Space - How much reduction in power and space is realized?

Bare Metal (Ironic) - Are there benefits to running OpenStack Bare Metal provisioning on a fabric architecture?
